Chances are that white stub out you see got soft and broke. You should be able to pick one up at Autozone to replace it.
This guy has your answer. Just an fyi that it's called a heater core.
Op, one of the hoses is taking coolant to your heater core and one away from the heater core. It is the same water/coolant mixture that us used to cool the engine. You will burn it up if you try to drive it.
However, you can connect those two hoses with a coupling. You don't need a heater right now, and it will get your vehicle moving very quickly.
All you'd need is a coupling, boxcutters (to cut the other hose), and two hose clamps.
