Walter wasnt a good man, but you enjoyed him because of his performance, combined with the writing and cinematic production of Breaking bad.
Walt is a good guy/villain combo with Walt/Heisenberg. But More villain than hero. However, I’m not interested in “oh, he’s a bad person have to root against him”. I watch him because he’s good at the game. He’s competent and sometimes ruthless. And most of his battles, he’s an underdog. A lot of times I think “how’s hes getting out of this”. And then he does talking risks and playing chess, manipulating characters.

That's the thing..and I hate to reference this..but at the end of the dark knight, when the joker talks about sanity and how it just takes a little "push".
The cancer was his push, to me the fire that was later named heisenberg was always lit, but became a wildfire. From what we know of him, he may always have been a schemer to get what he wanted.
I think he left Gretchen for Skylar, who was younger and prettier. Using the crossword puzzles he noticed as his icebreaker. He even drove a Porsche around that time, in a deleted scene. I often wondered if he regretted/resented Skylar in ways for that..but I dont see it. I think Walter really cared about her.
It's also hard to say..would he have been better at the game had he not been a legit lunatic? That's what got him there..but, 1 and a half year run compared to Gus' 20+ run,..i guess it goes back to his chemistry lessons on how rapid reactions can cause otherwise harmless substances to explode.
Beautiful frickin show.
