This. Anybody who thinks Archie was a terrible QB doesn't know how terrible those early Saints teams really were.
Especially during the years half the team was addicted to cocaine

The Dick Nolan teams? Those were his best years by a mile. That's when he was going to Pro Bowls.
It was the trash JD Roberts and John North teams that nearly broke him in his early years.
I think there was a personality clash between himself and Hank Stram. He was injured in Stram's first year and 1-8 in his second year, including the loss to the 0-26 Buccaneers.
Whatever it was, he just had so much bad luck. He was with the worst team ever his first few years. Then he got good and the team coked out on him and got traded to San Diego in 1980.
I remember an interview with him on NFL Films about being traded to Houston. He told Bum Phillips that he could forgive him for trading him from New Orleans, but he couldn't forgive him for being traded to the only team worse than New Orleans.
