Setting aside the plantation mentality that a player-draft is based upon (it’s all bad and should be run like European soccer), I don’t know why the Pelicans are so much worse than say, the Knicks. The Knicks are a horribly run organization. The Lakers (recently) are a horribly run organization. I don’t know why it’s such a forgone conclusion that these locations are “better”. They’re all owned by petty, failson billionaires that inherited their money. I see why the media has an interest for Zion to play in a large market, but the “this is bad for him as a person” stuff is kind of ridiculous.

I don’t understand Deadspin’s continuing beef with the Pelicans. As others have pointed out, most of the teams in the top 10 have incompetent management. The Lakers are every bit as incompetent but seem to think they deserve to be good because they are the Lakers, and for some reason the basketball media seems to agree. As a fan of a small market team, this annoys me to no end. Their advantages are myriad, we don’t need to just turn good players over for 50 cents on the dollar because they say so. Further, they suck at identifying and developing talent. Why should the rest of the league help them out there? Also, you all seem to despise the idea of AD to the Celtics, even though the Celtics are one of the most competently run basketball operations in the league and have spent years executing a strategy that balances their short and long-term outlooks. They are much more deserving of a player like AD than the Lakers, if competent management is the measuring stick. This frustrates me because I hate the Celtics! Do people forget that the Pelicans last year DEMOLISHED one of he teams in the WC finals this year? Don’t know what happened to the Pelicans this year but at this point, with a competent executive, their future appears as bright as any team in the league. If Anthony Davis wants to go elsewhere, he can go anywhere he wants next year. He could have done so a few years ago. Yes, the system is structured so he may have to give up compensation, but how many people have taken pay cuts to get a better work situation? I sympathize with labor, but you guys are grasping at straws here.
