My uncle was in the 101st and jumped on D-Day and was at the Bulge.
I asked him once why he decided to join the airborne and his answer was "hell son, it paid $50 a month more".
Was a raging alcoholic for several years after the war and was finally able to stop drinking in the 70s. I have a couple really cool pictures of him and three more guys that did a "bond drive tour" in the US after they came "home".
