I go to Gleason Gras every year, it is Steve Gleason's fundraiser for ALS. We buy VIP tickets every year because it is for a great cause. It has been going on since 2010. When it first started in 2010, 15-20 players would show up. Everyone from Drew Brees, Jeremey Shockey, Pierre Thomas, to Chris Reis & Thomas Morstead. As the years went on the player numbers dwindled. From 15-20, there would be 7 or 8 guys. The last 5 years, 1 or 2, sometimes 3 players. Thomas Morstead would show up most years. Mark Ingram or Cam Jordan would make a cameo for a year or two. Rickey Jackson or Morten.
But you know who has never missed one? Drew Brees. Not only does he come and shake everyone's hand and take pictures with whoever wants them, he is master of ceremony for the live auction. This past year there was an auction prize for a game signed Drew jersey. It wasn't getting many bids, maybe $900 at the time. Well he took it into his own hands and added to the auction. He said he'd play catch at the practice facility with whomever bought this package. From $900 it took off to about $8k. There were 3 people bidding, and he asked them if he could promise the same package to them, if they would buy it for $8k. So they all agreed, and in :30, he had went from $8k of donations, to $24K donations for ALS.
The guy really does go above and beyond. Yes even when no one is looking. He shows up to an event like this when it has become too time consuming or too cool for the other players that used to show up. He is there, raising money, putting his heart into it. He doesn't have to do this shite. It's in the middle of football season, he owns businesses, he has 4 kids, school, flag football. But he does, and i assume he will long after he retires a saint.
And I'm an internet badass, so I win.
