I find it interesting that out of the five full-time head coaches Ohio State's had since 1951, none of them were first-time head coaches before taking the job. In fact, all of them had been head coaches for at least five years. Ohio State's been successful for all of these years by hiring proven head coaches. That's why I and a lot of other people were surprised that they didn't at least explore the Matt Campbell option. He's the type of coach that Ohio State's been hiring for the last 70 years.

I think the difference is most OSU fans who really saw what was going on knew Day was going to be the next HC. I said it to be people in September. Urban was going to leave and Day was taking over unless he had taken a HC job before that.

I was made comfortable with the fact 4 months ago, so when it happens I'm not all of a sudden going to be questioning it now. I was questioning it in September when I knew it was going to happen; I was happy with the small sample I saw

There's no way to know if a guy is going to be a national championship or even B1G winning coach. No way you can know that no matter how good a guy looks as a HC at a smaller place.

No one would have seen Saban as a 5 time champ during his time at MSU. He was basically a.500 coach there. Dabo was a WR coach for about 5 years then basically took over and has been dynamite. Riley took over an OU program with no prior pedigree, while Herman took a 2 year longer route and was a good HC at Houston before getting his job at TX.

There are a lot of routes, and all can be successful or duds. I mean Kiffen was handed the keys to a Bentley at USC and Tennessee at a very young age and blew it. He's still getting it back together almost a decade later
