Many artists will concede (particularly lyricists, novelists and filmmakers) that they didn't always "intend" certain patterns, implied facts, back stories, etc., but realize they must be true (or are certainly reasonable on the part of the listener/reader/viewer) and grew out of the story organically.
I took a Novel and Short Story class at LSU taught by Dave Madden, who was LSU's writer in residence. A professional author and literary critic he explained it more or less -
You can't write everything. Every character has portions of background that remain unwritten. If a pattern is consistent with the story and enough references are included, an implied fact may emerge that the author didn't explicitly intend, but now that it is there, it can't be disputed, even by the author (unless he does so in a sequel, or whatever). That would be too rigidly textual.
