My dad bought me a 30-06 BAR when I was 8. 
I now hunt with a 7mm-08 remmington model 7 youth gun. After refinishing the stock, it’s an awesome little gun. I’ll probably hand it down to my son in a couple of years. I bought my daughter (6) a Savage lightweight hunter in .243. It weighs 5.5 LBs. If she doesn’t like hunting, I may take it for myself.
