will now charge battery when running.
How old is the battery? If 2 or more years old, might just need a new battery. Mower batteries really need to be on a float charge during winter months.
Clean all connections. Do not use eye test. sand battery terminals and wire connectors to battery and to solenoid.
if your battery isn't sealed, you need to make sure it has enough water before you charge it.
After cleaning all connections, you can try some tests to check alternator if still not working properly. There are some simple ways that don't need any equipment. Google them.
