Soundbar/projector issues

So I hooked up an RCA projector to my old PS3 recently to create a "home theater". HDMI picture quality but obviously the sound through the projector is terrible, so I bought a Vizio soundbar to try to enhance the experience.
PS3 is hooked up to projector through an HDMI cord, soundbar is hooked up to projector through an aux cord provided with the soundbar.
Now, I have a few songs downloaded directly to the PS3 which play perfectly through the soundbar, but when I try to play a movie disc, video game, or app (Netflix, YouTube) I get no sound at all. I would appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot this issue.

Does the PS3 have an optical out/bar have an optical in ?

It does. Would I do better going directly from PS3 to soundbar with the digital cord?

it would at the very least, help you figure out the issue..I always hate to put things in the audio mix that were not designed to host audio
