He wasn’t facing jail time. He was facing 40 weeks in a juvenile detention center. As part of his plea deal, he was sentenced to 20 weeks which was suspended.
Your narrative that he took a plea to avoid serious time is false.
Also, there are no juries in juvenile court proceedings in Oregon. Any narrative that he was facing a jury of uninformed, hotheaded, pitchfork weilding parents is false. He would have been tried before a juvenile court judge.
