San Diego would be my first choice if you could afford it. Has everything great about Cali with almost perfect weather year round, less traffic, and more affordability than LA or the Bay Area.
If you want a little of everything that is more reasonably priced, I’d say along the eastern seaboard from Virginia down into the Carolinas. Plenty of nice cities to choose from in there with tons to do and driving distance to all the outdoors activities you could want.
