DJ faced better competition. Give me dj over smart. Took a top 5 national team to the limit as a freshman. 2 state titles. Would have been a third. DJ would have been the 06 player of the year. He also actually had competition for that award when he was in school.
How can you say Smart had no competition? His sophomore year he beat out two top 150 recruits for Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr Basketball (Lamar Peters and Dejon Jarreau) and a guy who is playing great for a high major school right now (Cameron Lard). Last year he beat out a top 10 national recruit for LA Gatorade Player of the Year and MR Basketball (Mitchell Robinson). This year I thought Jared Butler from Riverside would take the awards from him because he was playing so well and Riverside was undefeated and had beaten Scotlandville twice but what Smart did to end the season (averaging over 40 a game and 10 rebounds) was almost like nothing I've ever seen. He was a member of the six person finalist group for MaxPreps National Player of the Year and he didn't even play a national schedule unlike guys like RJ Barrett. And Smart's game on his father's birthday when he scored 60 points stands among the most legendary HS games of all time in my opinion.

Who did he beat to win state? Tre Swilling and Parker Edwards?
And yea, the competition for Mr. Basketball was greater as well.
04 seniors included Big Baby and Shan Foster, 05 had Taz, Ryan Francis, Kenny Cooper and Terry Martin.
Mitch was never going to win. Not as a transplant playing in Chalmette.
