I know you all may kill me here, but how is good rum supposed to be enjoyed? Any recipes or ideas? Every time I have rum, it is in some fruity boat drink or like this (and not to be consumed 
)

Here is a short Bio of Rums.
Different Rums are distilled for different ways of drinking them.
i.e. Cuban rums are usually intended to be mixed with Coke, or Mojitos, or ..
Barbados Rums are smoother and great neat.
A lot of the other rums, Guatemala, Nicaragua, etc. each have their own personality ... think of them as Whiskey and find your taste.
FRUITY drinks are a vacation drink or party drink, not usually what most Rum drinkers drink.
Spiced rums, are popular, well advertised but also not classified as great rums by many ... except the original one Appleton Reserve.
