Consider what a luxury it was for its time, very expensive and only for the elite. So yes it would have an effect on more just him, but isolated to a particular group. I have read about it in the past and will try to get you a source with information.
Update
As usual there is much debate on the subject like every other subject. But it is generally now known that Rome used lead 200 years earlier than thought, that lead was used in the wine making process in a fairly high dose, used in cooking vessels, used in powder form and rubbed on the inside of the woman's vagina as a birth control device in many instances along with a long list of other uses. Plus of course the lead water pipe. So who knows really.
