In a word - Stability
they live in a very stable society with a very clear distinctions about where they fit, who is in charge and who their enemies are.
Is any of it real? No. Are their living conditions good? Hell no. Have they undergone one of the largest scale mental conditioning programs ever? Quite likely. All told, it's done under the guise of stability and there is comfort in stability.
