I think this is actually required to meet a clinical diagnosis of addiction. There has to be a consequence to your drinking that is ignored (losing a job, relationship, DUI). You can have a substance abuse problem but not be considered an alcoholic.

There's a difference between abuse and addiction. Addiction is unmistakable. You cannot function without it or you will get sick
