Because the goal, as a program in the SEC, is to win the conference and advance to the playoffs. Winning the west gets you to the SECCG.

But the OPs point is Bama doesn't. Not just this year, but any year, thus losing to LSU is meaningless for them. With that, he is trying to justify in his mind LSU losing to them is also meaningless, but it is not.
