I was in middle school, but i remember my dad talking about "how in the hell did shreveport get 5 casino licenses!?!" That was 1/3 of the state total, iirc.

Somebody was doing some cash oayouts, for sure

It's a convenient location close to a major Texas population center. There is one in Oklahoma near the Texas border as well for the same reason.

That's why Lake Chuck metro (292,000 people) has the same number of casinos as the Baton Rouge metro (850,000 people). Lake Chuck is more convenient to the Houston market.

I remember when some of those boats came in the mid 90s.

We were closer to Dallas than New Orleans was.
