There are no non lethal areas in the neck.
High powered rifle shot to the neck is not survivable. I have never had a single deer I neck shot take a step.
I don't deer hunt any more but when I did it was my preferred shot. You are much more apt to shoot one in the gut instead of the lungs or heart if shooting behind the shoulder.
It is an easier shot than trying to shoot exactly behind the shoulder but in front of the gut.

I would have to disagree with you there buddy, I was shot with a 7mm-08 from 65 yards IN THE NECK. It is a survivable injury and one that comes with miserable nerve pain for what I'm told could be the rest of my life. I will agree it's not common to survive a neck shot, but after having a personal reason to research it I found that it's more common than you would imagine.
