(1) It is less terrifying for a lot of people to believe there is something behind this. The notion that a (more of less) average individual could do something like this with no real way to prevent it scares the shite out of people.
(2) If ISIS is involved it will become a political football for the right (just like it is currently for the left, I'm not saying some side is worse than the other on this).
(3) Some people are so far down the MSM lies rabbit hole they can't dig themselves out.
(4) People are fricking crazy.
(5) People like tofeel like part of the smarter than thou club by supporting conspiracy theories.

This isn't typical conspiracy minded thinking where someone believes cause and effect are equally proportioned. It's not the body count that raises an eyebrow, it's the strange circumstances.
Also I have no idea but I'm also inclined to believe they're investigating his involvement with other people given how little a rabid press with no standards has had to report
