He went in with a friend under the buddy system and was over there in 1967.

Kudos to your pops.
I understand posters seeing it as a smart play to avoid it, but that shouldn't be used as a negative towards the people who volunteered.
Whether we should have been there or not because your father did what he did was that was one less person forced into something against their will, or at the least additional support for someone there against their will.
