Yep, so smart that manufactures have since 2010 starting using what they call permanent codes, they won't clear until the problem is fixed, not by unhooking the battery, not even with a fancy scanner. You clear the light it comes right back on until the poors who owns the car actually fixes it. This isn't all codes that can come up, but all emissions related codes for sure.
