For most Federal employees, it is a reduced pension, a 401K-type product and SS retirement. The old days of the 2.5% pension per year are almost gone - only folks with over 34 years are in that category.

The standard pension is 1% per year, which isn't necessarily all that and a bag of potato chips. Better than a lot of hardworking folks get in the private sector, but not what most folks think of for a government pension.
