I would like to see something to explain why Rhaegar and Lyanna didn't tell anyone the truth before they started a war that got their family members killed.

Well we've seen over 7 seasons how important honor was to the Stark family. It's everything to them. How much shame would Lyanna have brought to her family for dumping the man she was promised to in order to marry a married man with children? Rhaegar was the prince and heir to the throne so he probably didn't care what people said about him, but his love for Lyanna probably compelled him to try to protect her honor and her family's honor by allowing himself to be the villain in their fabricated story. Young people in love do stupid things.

Read the books. Lyanna was betrothed to Robert and Rhaegar was already married to Elia. They ran away together in secret. Robert found out and rather than admit that his girl ran off with another man, he claimed she was kidnapped and threatened war to win her back. Brandon Stark (Ned's older brother) demanded justice from Rhaegar and the return of his sister. Aerys (Mad King) had Brandon locked up and summoned Rickard (Ned's father) to King's Landing to ransom him. Instead, though, he captured Rickard as well and brutally executed both Rickard and Brandon. THAT is what truly set off the war.
