Grover Cleveland was the last Democrat who could be classified as a classical liberal. The party nominated populist William Jennings Bryan in 1896 and then followed the economic policies of free silver and agrarian populism. Had Cleveland lived through WWI, he would have become a Republican. The policies of Calvin Coolidge and later Robert Taft were much closer to Cleveland than the Democrat of the mid-20th century.
