This isn't really a dishonesty story, but just noting the high cost of mechanics. Maybe they were swinging for the fences here I don't know.
Had an F150 with the notorious two-piece factory spark plugs. Hesitant to remove them myself based on what I had read (they break in half when removed), I got a quote for $800+ just to remove them. That didn't include putting in new plugs.
I researched some more and found the removal tool and did this in my garage. Took a few hours but it was an $80 tool that I was able to sell on Ebay to the next guy that had this issue.
