Hope you like crowds, the week between xmas and New Years is typically the busiest of the year. Wait 2 weeks longer and not only will crowds will be lower, cost will be as well. I would probably choose Copper or Winter Park if you want a no frills experience for a beginner. If you want more of a mountain town experience go to Steamboat or Crested Butte but be prepared to pay a lot more. Stay away from Vail and Breck unless you like waiting in line for 30 mins for each lift. If you want on Mountain lodging you need to book asap.
