NEW YORK — In a showdown of the only two perfect teams in the league, the Chuck Blazer Memorial All-Stars found yet another way to scratch and claw for another win.
A top-notch performance from Sead Kolasinac and yet another goal for captain Romelu Lukaku were just enough for the Chuck Cats to move past Roque's Stache and the Dodgy Flappers and maintain their grip on top of the table.
"We've been waiting for a performance like this from Sead," manager Freddy Adu said. "He finally had the freedom to play his natural wingback spot, and he made the absolute most of it. The international break was good for him."
In a matchup of underwhelming midfields and a goal apiece from Lukaku and Alvaro Morata, Kolasinac's defensive performance was the difference in front of a game Lukasz Fabianski, who reclaimed his spot as the starting goalkeeper.
The Chuck Cats might have played with fire in their fourth straight home win, as bench player Danny Welbeck could simply do no wrong on the sidelines. He hammered home two goals and an assist on a practice net, but Adu kept him out of the entire match.
"I don't understand why people don't have faith in me, an Arsenal attacker," Welbeck said afterwards. "We are the models of consistency, so not getting the start was baffling to me."
But even without Welbeck, Adu's men got the offense they needed to get past their closest competition for first place.
The Chuck Blazer Memorial All-Stars will host their fifth straight match at The Cats' Penthouse Stadium this weekend before a road trip to Dad Hat-Wearing SEC Post-Frat FC.
DHWSPFFC won the bribe lottery this offseason with all 36 of their matches coming at their home stadium, the Yeti Coolers Coliseum.
"This is adversity that we'll have to push through," Adu said. "This #CampaignAgainstChuckCats will not slow us down. We will avenge our Jedi master."
