Agreed. But only in the last 20-30 years are historians starting to re-evaluate Grant's reputation and generalship. The man was beloved in his day but his reputation really suffered thanks to Lost Cause historians taking over the scholarship of the Civil War in the 1880s and 1890s.

Grant's reputation also took a hit because of his disastrous presidency. He was no judge of character and made uniformly atrocious appointments.
