Ah, but which authority defines what is socially acceptable? The problem seems more that the culture has changed and that it's you who struggles to know when it's acceptable to use colorful language.

It hasn't changed. Most people still realize it's inappropriate to use certain language in certain settings. I have no particular struggle in this area, but you apparently do.

It has nothing to do with Puritanism, that's your bias. It's recognizing your audience
