Question for recording engineers re: Crotch mic

would an SM57 suffice for this mic or would a condenser microphone be a better choice?

Condenser mics are generally superior to dynamic mics but they are temperamental and exspensive. The SM57 is a very good mic for the money and you can hammer a nail with them. And they sound decent on almost anything.
