I'm no mechanic, but I would assume that any combustion going on in the engine has no way to reach back to the fuel tank. If it did, I wouldn't think having the gas cap on or off would necessarily matter.

No I think the same thing. I don't think there is any likely way something would happen. I'm just saying, I'm not taking my chances.
