WWI is a perfect war for the villain of the story because it is literally just fighting and perpetual death without any real clear goals in mind. For the villain that I won't mention, it is exactly the kind of perpetual warfare that he would want so in this regard I actually the decision a lot.

Well, I was thinking about the animated Wonder Woman, which I like a lot.
In that version, Steve Trevor not only has a pretty good dog fight sequence in what are kinda sorta F-22s, he gets to save Themiscyra with the invisible plane.
All that is off the table in a WWI setting. We'll see if they made it work.
