MY GSD wasn't learning the boundaries very well, so I decided to let her off leash. first thing she did was break for the front yard. She got the shite shocked out of her and just laid down instead of coming back to the yard. Training her was a peach after that once she knew what the consequences were for leaving the perimeter. I do not even put the collar on her anymore and she stays in the yard. She got a little gun shy the first time we took her for walk after getting shocked, basically had to drag her down the the driveway.

Like I said, the biggest factor is the dog's pain threshold.
