I agree with you. Just for curiosity I just asked my wife and my father, both of whom have been to both Norther Ireland and the Republic of Ireland....and neither of them are aware that they are two separate nations. I would bet that this is the case with the vast majority of Americans.

I have spent a considerable amount of time in Edinburgh (Everything that is great about London at half the price) and I still don't understand why there is a Scottish Pound and a British Pound but I know if you pay with Scottish pounds you pay more than you do with British pounds....and the people act like it pisses them off to accept Scottish Pounds....and the dam things look nearly identical...

You don't find this as much in Gibraltar where they have their own pound note. Either seems to be accepted there as well as Euros....and of course dollars are welcome wherever you go...
