You have to look up their census records, marriage records, birth records...

All of those would give the names of your grandparents' parents.

The really interesting stuff though comes from the newspaper articles though.

For example my great great grandfather was killed in the line of duty as a police officer in Jackson, Miss. I was able to find the newspaper articles that described what happened, the following attempted lynching, trial, and execution of the perp.
