Texas wanted no part of LSU in the Cotton Bowl, having been shut out in their previous bowl game with LSU, and plead with Notre Dame to end their self-imposed bowl ban to play them in the Cotton.
The University of Texas was not just sitting passively, waiting for their opponent to be picked for the premier sporting event in their state.

That was seven years earlier. Would you really be scared to play, say, Penn State because they beat us in a bowl game eight years ago?
