You don't have to wait in line to turn in a tag. Just walk up to the counter and they will take it, and give you a receipt. Then call your insurance and drop the coverage. You can do it the other way around but make sure you explain to your insurance what you are doing. That way they don't cancel your coverage before you have time to make it to the DMV to turn in your tag.
