Why is Israel worth 1 American soldier?
It isn't.
But 4,500 Amercan service members died to remove Saddam Hussein - a strategic objective of Israel's. BUT - destroying Iraq as a stable if creepy country was the OPPOSITE of US national interests. A stable Iraq suited us as even Dick Cheney knew.
Cheney 1994
Once more: 4,500 US service people died for Israel to achieve an objective opposite our national interests.
Israel was formed in the wake of the horrendous exposure of Germany's final solution. Many thousands of Jews were turned away from American shores and sent back to certain death in Europe. Creating a haven for the jews seemed worthy then and it is worthy.
The problem is that now is Israel is the problem. They are okay, not as bad as the Nazis but they are still pretty bad. Their Drang Nach Osten (Urge to the East) is an urge to take over the West Bank of the Jordan River. They are relentlessly seizing that land from its inhabitants with no possible end game except genocide.
As long as Israel is the leading force in ensuring there will never be peace, the US should not support them.

The actual reasons are myriad.
The historical reason is a collective "we fricked up" from the UK and USA when France (fricked up right? Northern Europe was all frick you Nazis. France was all we can fit more on the trains, please, thank you.) and Germany went slash and burn on them and everyone turned them away.
Then they were an easy way to snatch Soviet tech and defectors.
The modern reason is friendliest allied black site and an easy testing ground for weapon systems.
So we've created a feedback loop of money for weapons, weapons for money.

1- Israel has been attacked over and over. Each time they gained land, they gave it back until the LAST time.
2- Israel has always been an Ally of the US, the ME in general has not.
3- Israel is not committing genocide.
