A fool and his money.

The real victims are the kids whose parents are buying the hype because of their nostalgia.

getting a kid to play these games with terrible graphics these days rarely works out

I've seen the opposite effect 2/3rds of the time. The simpler gameplay and the catchy music hooks most of them in. My nieces and nephews can't put down most of the games I put in front of them. Especially stuff from the genesis/snes era.

Give a kid spy hunter on the nes or choplifter on the master system and see if he snuffs at it.

Yeah, this isn't true, at least not for my kids. I've played the most recent Ratchet and Clank game with my 6 year old son and 5 year old daughter, which to them is on the same level as a Pixar movie.

And I've played Metal Slug on my Raspberry Pi with them.

Guess which one they've asked several times to play more of? They also love playing Contra on the NES and Pokemon on the GBA, which both have even more primitive graphics. I have to convince them to play Ratchet and Clank with me.
