Definitely would do it yourself. The tours (saw them on the road and places we stopped) look like a shitshow, not to mention when you drive yourself you can spend more time at the spots you want and less at others that aren't as much of interest.

The Geysir was not that great and we didn't spend that much time there. The nation park was pretty nice and Gulfoss was awesome. Our hotel concierge also told us to stop at Kerið (a large crater) which re-opened recently after being closed a for a few years.

Also, by driving yourself, you'll be able to stop at nice random points along the way and take family pics with awesome backgrounds.
