What do I need to rent a car up there? Just a international license?

No, I don't have an international license. Although I don't live there anymore, I still have a Louisiana drivers license and that worked just fine.
I rented the car at KEF and drove to Reykavik which I think was better than taking a cab there and renting in town and then having to take a cab back to the airport.
Also makes it easier if you plan to make a stop at the Blue Lagoon either enroute to Reykavik or on your way back to the airport.

American license works. They drive on right. I rented at KEF as well. Very easy. Much better I think to drive on your own, tour buses the whole time would be pretty miserable I think.
We did Golden Circle, probably the least favorite of trip IMO. I enjoyed hiking around Vik, Skogar and a small town east of Vik. We also did some hiking on Westman Islands, took the ferry out there and stayed a night. It was awesome. We did 3 nights and Reykjavik and that was more than enough.
Blue Lagoon was great, ate at the Lava Cafe there and really enjoyed that. Would be happy to answer any other questions. Really enjoyed our trip and I want to go back for sure.
