No. He showed up on the animated series as well.

The character returned in The Animated Series and was voiced by Roger C. Carmel (Jimmy Doohan voiced a lot of the guest male characters in TAS, as did Majel Barrett for many of the guest female characters on TAS - for budgetary reasons), so I would say no. They considered bringing him back for the films - particularly after the success of TWOK, but Carmel died young (age 54) in 1986.
