One of the main issues in this country these days. Everyone feels the need to have to pick one side or the other. And whichever side you're on, everyone just assumes you're the extreme of that side

I agree with this. I also think that the major problem with having a racial discussion nowadays is that we're usually having these discussions in groups were the people think, act, and most importantly LOOK like us- case in point this board, the OT, and that loony poliboard (it's alright though, because black people literally do the same exact thing.)

We lock ourselves in these loud echo chambers, and we think we're actually making progress; mainly because A: The same points are being brought up over and over again (and everyone is agreeing to it) and B: Instead of realizing the flaws from both races and coming up with solutions where both races can come together, we're too busy blaming the other side for all of societies' problems ("well things would be so much better if THEY would just fix their act").

And when someone from the other side does come over and try to offer their opinions and solutions we immediately dismiss them.
"Gee, his opinion is different from mine so he MUST be wrong".

It doesn't help that they don't have any support, so they're automatically disqualified from the discussion. "Well no one else seems to agree with him so he must not know what the Hell he's talking about......"

And God help you if you're the same race as everyone else but you agree with the other side. Instead of trying to broaden your mind and trying to empathize with someone else who's different than you, you're labeled as a "Coon", or a "Sellout", or having "White Guilt". You're considered to have self hatred simply because you don't have the same popular opinion of everyone else around you.

Now BOTH sides are guilty of this. Black people and white people. Dems and Repubs. The most narrow minded MAGA trumpkin and the most thin skinned perpetually offended SJW. The thing is when it comes to racial issues, both side have valid, factual points. Everyone has something they can offer to the table to help progress are racial problems.

However both sides (in terms of black and white people) have GLARING issues that everyone in that party seems to ignore into thinking that they dont exist (or isn't their fault). And when someone (no matter their color) brings up these points the group immediately shuts them down and disavows any and every point they try to make.

TLDR the main reason why we can't have a meaningful discussion on race is that we're huddled in our own safe spaces and are too damn stubborn to admit to our flaws and see the other side. Until we all do this our problems will continue as they have for hundreds of years.

There is really no reason to play it before sporting events. Why don't we play it before movies or plays? Why don't we play it before we open the local McDonald's every morning?

As others have noted it began during WWI at baseball games. Maybe we should play it before we tee off in our golf league or our bowling league. Those are sporting events. Why not play before recreational softball games?
