Serious question - why does a model like the GFS run out for 384 hours? What conceivable good can come from the general public seeing a major hurricane run right up their arse 16 days out?

scientist like to try things would be my best guess. Most people don't know what the GFS is, that it goes 16 days into the future, etc.
edit: the hurricane the GFS is predicting has a forcast cone from basically the middle of the atlantic to the LA texas border. There is no way that a 16 day forcast will be accurate, but the current wave coming off Africa will be one to watch.
