You misunderstood. I wasn't comparing the rosters they inherited. I was comparing the national perception, and perception is reality. LSU was not viewed as an elite national program when Saban took over. He got there, "built a fence" around Louisiana, won with mostly homegrown talent, and by the time he left the next LSU coach could walk into a living room in Miami or Houston and credibly say, "come play for our elite football program."

Saban won the first title there since the 50's. He made LSU elite again from a national perspective as well as making it a destination school for recruits across the country.
