I definitely can't speak for all, but I pray to delve more deeply within myself and maintain a spiritual connection with God. I usually spend my time in prayer simply contemplating and thanking God for the blessings that I do have.
An attitude of gratitude (regardless of who or what it's directed toward) fosters a happier lifestyle. And this is not religious mumbo-jumbo. Secular science has found evidence for this. LINK
