Sometimes we start off on shittier playing fields. Went to a public school with 50/50 makeup. Single mother, shite non existent dad, low income. I turned out fine. My mom worked her arse off. I worked my arse off. We got by and I got ahead.

I mean this with all sincerity - congratulations. Beating the odds like that should always be commended.

Sure as hell wasn't the color of my skin that did that. And for people to claim the color of my skin had anything to do with it and not the work ethic and effort put forth by my mother just pisses me off and minimizes what the woman that raised me went through and did. So yeah maybe I take this white privilege shite a little personnel and will always think its a fricking joke.

It isn't about minimizing what you and your mother accomplished. It is/was hard as hell for you and your mother to pull it off. It is not so much about you having an advantage because of your skin color as much as it is that being non-white puts you at a slight disadvantage. 64% of this country is white. The vast majority of business owners are white. The vast majority of hiring managers are white. Managers and owners subconsciously like to surround themselves with people who are like just like them - from their personality, work ethic, and even their outward appearance. It is human nature, and nothing to be ashamed of, but it is the truth.

You and your mom didn't have a conscious advantage rooted in racism like some want to paint it, but you and your mom went into most opportunities looking like the people who were making the decisions, and to deny that a black mother and son would be at a slight disadvantage is simply untrue.

Like me working every summer full time out in the sun. Working after school when I wasn't involved with sports. My mom getting laid off at Thanksgiving and taking a job at a dollar store stocking shelves to put food on the table without ever being on welfare? Me working 40 hrs a week while having a full class schedule in college. Being field labor and having to travel right after I graduated college to get my foot in the door. Please tell me more about my advantage and non-white disadvantage. It had nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with doing what was necessary.
